Teaching Yoga to People with Sciatica - with Aimee Newton

The workshop begins with a clear explanation of sciatica, including the anatomical structures involved and the sciatic nerve pathway. We will then explore the common causes of sciatic pain, including lower back issues, piriformis syndrome, and other potential triggers that yoga teachers should be aware of.

Participants will gain insight into the pathology of sciatica, learning to distinguish between different types of sciatic discomfort and their implications for practice. The core of the workshop focuses on effective sequencing principles for sciatic relief. Aimee shares her approach to creating yoga sequences that address the underlying issues while avoiding movements that might exacerbate symptoms. This includes specific pose modifications for different sciatica presentations.

All workshop participants receive a complimentary 10-minute video demonstration of a gentle sciatica relief sequence that they can reference later or share with their students.

This workshop is ideal for yoga teachers of all levels who want to deepen their understanding of a common condition and enhance their ability to work safely and effectively with affected students.

About Aimee

Aimee brings over 20 years of yoga teaching experience, complemented by rigorous osteopathic training, to her practice and instruction. Her journey began as a yoga teacher, where she developed a deep understanding of traditional yoga before advancing to osteopathy as a natural progression of her expertise.

After earning her M.Ost Masters Degree in Osteopathy from the University College of Osteopathy (UCO), Aimee worked at the prestigious UCO Clinic in London. Her professional practice combines hands-on osteopathic techniques with therapeutic yoga principles, creating a holistic approach to treatment and education.

Teaching Better Balance with Yoga - with Kate Knowles

Kate has struggled with balance issues over the years. As a result she has studied balance extensively as a way to improve her own wellbeing. Having experienced first hand the benefits that yoga can bring to people in maintaining and improving their sense of balance, Kate is keen to share this knowledge with other teachers.

Kate has shared this event with the Merseyside Yoga Association, Sussex BWY and Cheshire Yoga Teachers Association.

Hypermobility on the Yoga Mat - with Jess Glenny

Hypermobile people are generally over-represented in the yoga world – it’s a rare class that doesn’t have at least a couple of hypermobile participants – but yoga teachers often feel under-equipped to deal with this population. Not surprisingly, for perhaps no group of students contains so much diversity in terms of physical capacity and so much complexity of need. Little about yoga and hypermobility is clear-cut or generalisable to every hypermobile person, and so faced with hypermobile students, yoga teachers can end up feeling confused and incompetent.

In this workshop, we will be looking at some general principles that may help us to understand what’s going on for our hypermobile students and how we can assist them in ways that are helpful and digestible. What we cover will reflect the interests of participants, but may include:

  • What hypermobility is and how it affects hypermobile people
  • Strength, stability and control inside and outside yoga
  • Proprioceptive limitations / dyspraxia
  • Hypermobility, neurodivergence and yoga
  • Yoga practices and nervous system regulation
  • Which teaching settings best serve hypermobile students
  • Students with complex needs and teachers' scope of practice
  • Postures and practices that are ‘good’ / ‘bad’ for hypermobility
  • Dizziness, pranayama struggles and orthostatic issues

Please bring any of your own experiences – positive and negative – of teaching hypermobile students that you might like to share, and if you are also yourself hypermobile, your experiences of being a student are very welcome. Jess is Autistic and welcomes neurodivergent teachers to this workshop.

About Jess

Jess Glenny has been practising yoga in a hypermobile body for over 40 years and teaching hypermobile students for more than 20. She is an IAYT-registered yoga therapist and is the author of Hypermobility on the Yoga Mat: A Guide to Hypermobility-Aware Teaching and Practice. Jess says:

"When I set out my stall in 2003, I had no intention of specialising in hypermobility teaching. Hypermobile people came anyway. At that point, there was little awareness of the joint hypermobility syndromes in the yoga world, and most of us with genetic hypermobility were poorly served by the existing attitudes and approaches to working with what, at the time, was rarely identified as a physiological condition. I had no formal training (none existed), but I did have a little knowledge about hypermobility, and a lot of experience of trying to make yoga work for me. And so it began."
